JDC West and My Takeaways
JDC West is one of Western Canada’s largest undergraduate business competitions, bringing together students from leading universities to compete in academic, athletic, and social challenges in a 3 day competition. The event emphasizes teamwork, strategic thinking, and professionalism while giving students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world business cases.
Participating in JDC West was an incredibly valuable experience that pushed me to grow both personally and professionally. Through weekly practices and competition preparation, I became a stronger public speaker and more confident presenter. The demanding schedule taught me how to manage my time effectively while balancing school, work, and club commitments. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with a team of like-minded, motivated individuals, which strengthened my teamwork and communication skills. Beyond that, I gained hands-on professional experience and developed my ability to analyze complex business cases, think critically under pressure, and deliver clear, strategic solutions.
My JDC West Experience
As a Delegate
At JDC West Okanagan, I was a delegate on the Not-for-Profit team, where my teammates and I met weekly to prepare for the competition. Each practice involved completing a full case breakdown, creating a presentation, and presenting it to our coach and faculty members to receive feedback and identify areas for improvement. This experience helped me become a more confident public speaker and presenter, while also developing my analytical thinking and problem-solving skills in real business scenarios. The fast-paced and high-pressure environment taught me how to balance the heavy time commitment of the club with my academic and personal responsibilities. Through this, I strengthened my time management and conflict resolution skills, often helping mediate team discussions to find solutions that worked for everyone.
As VP Marketing
When the original VP of Marketing stepped down, a friend and I were asked to take over the role as co-VPs of Marketing because of our shared interest in the position and passion for creativity. In this role, I strengthened my skills in scheduling, multitasking, and clear communication. I attended weekly meetings with the other VPs to plan upcoming club events and initiatives, which taught me how to effectively manage my time while balancing schoolwork and leadership responsibilities. I was also responsible for managing the club’s social media accounts and creating promotional content, primarily using Canva for its intuitive design tools and seamless posting features. This experience helped me further develop my organizational and creative skills while learning the importance of consistency and teamwork in building an engaging brand presence.
