Teaching Assistant at the University of British Columbia Okanagan
During my time as a student at UBC, I took on the role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) and had the opportunity to support three different courses — MGMT 100, MGMT 290, and MGMT 360. In MGMT 100, I conducted two weekly workshops focused on Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. I guided students through their assignments, offered individualized support, and diligently graded submissions according to the professor’s rubric. For MGMT 290, my primary responsibility was providing in-lecture support, as the course involved hands-on learning activities during class time. I attended all lectures to assist students with group work, ensuring they understood the material and stayed on track with their assignments, which I also helped grade. In MGMT 360, I was responsible for marking learning journals, where students reflected on course concepts and applied them to real-world examples. I also provided in-class support during group exercises when needed. Across all three courses, I assisted with invigilating and grading exams, as well as responding to student emails and inquiries. This experience taught me how to effectively manage my time, stay organized, and balance multiple responsibilities while supporting both professors and students.
Marketing Intern at the Regional Animal Protection Society
My internship at the Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) was an incredibly fulfilling and educational experience. I was exposed to the wide range of work a nonprofit does while gaining hands-on experience in a marketing role. During my time with RAPS, I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create visually appealing graphics for social media posts as well as physical posters and banners. I had never used the Adobe Creative Suite before this role, but by learning from my mentor and teaching myself the applications, I quickly developed a strong understanding of the platforms and was able to produce high-quality graphics. Additionally, I used Hootsuite to schedule posts across all of RAPS’ social media platforms.
At the start of my internship, the organization was preparing for the RAPS Gala, an annual fundraising event supporting the animal hospital and future dog sanctuary. This was a particularly busy time, giving me insight into the extensive planning required to organize a gala and the opportunity to assist with its execution. I created all the posters for the silent auction items, helped with both setup and takedown, and contributed to the event’s overall success, which raised over $20,000.
I also assisted with transferring and adding blog content to the organization’s new website, gaining valuable experience with WordPress. In addition, I maintained communication with the Communications team to create and send newsletters as part of their email marketing and ensure website content was up to date. Another highlight of my internship was spending a day at the Vancouver Pride Festival alongside another intern and the CEO, where we engaged with community members, handed out coupons, and promoted RAPS and their animal hospital.
This was a hybrid role with minimal supervision, so prioritizing tasks and managing my time effectively was critical to excelling in the position.
